About Glen Meikle

Glen is a self-taught artist with a passion for all aspects of art, architecture, and design. His many years of experience in designing and creating interior designs has given him a foundation to apply his handcrafting skills to his art. Throughout these years of design/building, he would experiment with making art with leftover materials from projects. His preferred medium is using plaster in any format to achieve a variety of 3 D sculpture affects.

During his years spent in China, he started to produce sculpted works of Asian art to reflect good meaning for his office. A passion soon became a full-time venture after a host of people would inquire where he bought his artworks. Since starting to sell his works full time in 2014 Glen has had the great opportunity to show and sell his art pieces at the Vancouver Art Gallery while they hosted the “Forbidden City” Exhibition. For Glen it signified a vision coming full circle as a lot of his initial inspiration to capture the iconic symbolism came from the forbidden city. He continues to explore expressing themes by sculpturing, molding, painting and casting his creations.

Originally from Vancouver, he spends most of his time at his art studio in Shenzhen and divides time in Hong Kong and Vancouver as well.

Good Fortune Tablets

Was developed from Glen wanting to add art in his office when he was the director of product development for a seasonal products company years ago in China. Being self-taught in Mandarin he learned about the five auspicious meanings Fu=Good Fortune, Lu=Properity, Shou= Longevity, Xi=Happiness, Cai=Wealth. The variety of icons that reflect these meanings abound in China. Around 2008, he sculpted his first concept of wall decor combining his creativity and desire to surround himself with these unique elements of Oriental design.

Through his fascination with Chinese history, language and culture he would integrate the design elements collected from his travels to reflect a multitude of Chinese motifs, designs, and patterns into his wall art. All of these elements combined reflect both the beautiful symbolism and auspicious meanings of the rich Chinese culture.

Heart 2 Heart

This is a brand new art series as of fall 2019 that’s derived from Glen listening to music while painting and sculpting in his art studio. He first experimented making a large version of a heart in 1993 out of shaping plaster and wire on 36”x36” piece of plywood. That heart concept has stuck with him for a long time thinking about how he might express another form. Like some artists, you formulate ideas and edit in your head all the time until one day the opportunity to express it through art presents itself. The evolution of making the Good Fortune Tablets lead to this alternate version to articulate the multitude of meanings based on the heart.

“What you cannot express in words this Heart art series allows you to convey a multitude of meanings; whether it is joyful, playful, serious or in any grouping lets anyone to express their story in a fun way or share their expression with others
